Why I Decided to Launch My Own Homepage Over a Quarter into the 21st Century:
In May 2026, an exhibition titled "Connection Established: Digital Folklore and Web Craft" (curated by Kendal Beynon and Sam Mercer) was held at The Photographers' Gallery in London.
The exhibition's website featured a statement to this effect:
"In response to the rise of AI, a growing awareness of environmental impacts, and a reality where our every move is constantly under surveillance, online artists are returning once again to 'Craft' and 'Zine' making. (...) This exhibition traces the history of online communities, exploring and inviting participation in the resurgence of the digital 'Handmade'."
When I actually visited the gallery, I found a display embedded in one of the walls. The screen showed text-based, multiple-choice questions reminiscent of an old-school PC. Beneath them was a message stating, "Discover the alternative web practice that suits you best."
Using the mouse on a small table, I clicked through the questions one by one. After answering a few prompts, the screen finally revealed my personalized result for "the alternative web practice that suits you best."
For me, it was: "Make your own personal homepage!"
